ABSTRACT • I ended up living in my own poem …A review of metapoetic elements in the poetry of Boris Ryzhy • In the panorama of contemporary Russian poetry, Boris Ryzhy (1974-2001) is a figure of rising importance. In several papers and monographs, Russian and Western scholars have shown the persistent dominance in Ryzhy’s corpus of direct and indirect intertextual references to Russian, Soviet, and Post-Soviet poets. This is the most visible aspect of Ryzhy’s metapoetic approach. This paper demonstrates that in fact almost his entire corpus is metapoetic, and that metapoetics is a key element in Ryzhy’s different techniques. We can find in the poetry of Ryzhy seven metapoetic typologies allocated to two macro-categories: 1) «meta-verse» (refer to poets, titles, poems, own verse [autoquotes], to the role of poetry and his fictional alter ego [«poet B.»]), and 2) «meta-poems» (programmatic «manifestos»). The latter are of great interest as they give evidence of Ryzhy’s exclusive relationship with Poetry. A multitude of metapoetic examples show that in Ryzhy’s verse life and poetry completely overlapped at the deepest existential level.
