Abstract

The recently collapsed A10-Motorway cable-stayed bridge across the valley of Polcevera river in Genoa has different names according to its sociolinguistic variation, including a reference to the Brooklyn Bridge. As it happens, the (either popular or scientific) etymology of each name displays semantic links with the topographic environment of the bridge. Etymologies of other place-names (among them Brocholano, Brancolino, Brancolano, Élsa, Fièsole, Bé(z)audun, Besalù, Brīnĭātĕs/Frīnĭātĕs, Fĕrtor, Fregene, Fĕlsĭnă, Fèrsina, Feltre, Fodóm, Bièntina, Bibbona, Bivona, Ephesus, and York) and personal names (Morandus) as well as of Celtic nouns (*ĕbŭrŏs ‘yew’, *brŏkkŏs ‘badger’) are also discussed, with special emphasis on Breukelen (Utrecht) and Rio Broccolino (Florence), together with the issue of the ancient Ligurian-Italic border in Etruria and the */#bʱ/-to-/#b/ vs. */#bʱ/-to-/#f/-isogloss.
