Abstract

Thanks to the analysis of the sponge siliceous spicules present in ancients sediments trapped into coralligenous bio-concretions, the sponge biodiversity had been studied in the last 6000 years in the Porto Cesareo MPA (Ionian Sea). The sponge richness trend, in terms of presence of genera, showed a long stable period (among 5800 and 4500 YBP) of high biodiversity that overlapped the Holocene Climatic Optimum.
