Recent studies on specific aspects of the history of the Olivetti Company and its entrepreneurs allow us to outline a general view of the growth and the decline of the firm during the twentieth century. The firm has operated for a long time in a highly competitive market, presenting innovative products. In the age of globalization the competitive advantages and capabilities of the firm are no more sufficient to avoid the decline. This decline symbolizes, at least in part, the decline of the Italian manufactures. The experience of Olivetti has been relevant even in the field of Corporate social responsibility and still offers suggestions and questions for the challenges of the present time
