According to more than one critic, in France the literary twenty-first century began in the late 1970s. This paper starts from this premise, and – focusing on the study of Jean Echenoz’s narrative style – aims at tracing its lines of development. Highlighting the peculiarities and textual strategies od Des éclairs (2010), it clarifies how the protagonist gets shaped, and targeted by the narrator’s irony; and discusses the cumbersome narrator’s own role as an avatar of the author, who teases his reader by hiding or showing himself at will.
