The reception of US poetry in Italy since WW2 has been marked by numerous anthologies (especially in the early post-war years) and a large number of volumes by individual poets. Besides Dickinson and Whitman, especially the former, the major Modernists and the Beats have been much translated, perhaps more consistently than in other countries. Of the post-war confessional poets, Lowell, Berryman, and especially Plath and Sexton have acquired a following. The presence of the Beat poets (Ginsberg Corso Ferlinghetti) in Italian bookshops still surprises US poetry critics, who often question their standing -- but their popularity is unmistakeable. There is also a notable interest in contemporary t poetry, in line with the trend of Italian publishing, ith various collections brought out by major houses (Strand, Simic, Wright, Graham, Collins).
