Abstract

Since 1851, when the Crystal Palace housed London’s Great Exhibition, and during a little more than a century, World’s Fairs present themselves as showcases of a capitalist utopia of scientific progress and plenty. Until when, around the middle of XX century, this role faded, utopia gradually evolved in ideology, and reality both exceeded and betrayed those expectations. The story of this transition takes place over a period of about twenty-five years, and is told here by describing the evolving image that over this time architecture has built for the expositions.
