The interfacial reactions between SnxZn1-x alloys and Ni substrate were experimentally investigated at 873K. The composition profile of the diffusion layers have been determined by EPMA analysis. Three ternary phases and four binary phases with large solubility of the third element have been determined in the diffusion layers. The formation of intermetallic compounds (IMCs) and the morphology of the diffusion layers change with Zn content and annealing time. The sequence of IMCs formation and diffusion paths of SnxZn1-x(liquid)/Ni(solid) diffusion couples have been illustrated according to the composition profile of the diffusion layers and the isothermal section of the Ni-Sn-Zn system at 873K.
