Abstract

The Parallel Lives show a marked sensitivity for military matters, which is often neglected by most Plutarch scholars. He especially provides long and thorough descriptions of ground and naval battles. Some of these military engagements are presented as real “decisive battles”, not only for their effect on the destiny of the actors, but also for their historical impact and, more generally, for Greek and Roman history. In this introductory paper we check the narrative strategies of Plutarch, taking into account his choices of perspective.
