There have been numerous anthologies of Italian poetry in English. A bibliography of these is appended to the present paper. The New Italian Poetry, 1945 to the Present, commercially published in 1981, presented an innovative selection of experimentalists and new realists, but omitted towering figures like Sereni and Caproni. This excellent beginning was followed by many anthologies from small publishers, among them Italian Poetry, 1950-1990 (1996) and Contemporary Italian Women Poets (2001). Mainstream . publishing houses produced two important later selections. The Faber Book of 20th-Century Italian Poems (2004) is a personal choice by poet-translator Jamie McKendrick, and offers a well-chosen selections of poems in English alone. The FSG Book of 20th-century Italian Poetry (2012), edited by Geoffrey Brock, is a massive and handsome bilingual volume, covering both canonical and less established figures, and including work by about 150 translators. This extensive and distinguished record of publications and translations indicates that 20th-century Italian poetry has generated much interest among English-speaking writers, publishers, and possibly readers.
