Abstract

Novel RNi6Si6 compounds adoptthenewCeNi6Si6-type structurefor R¼La–Ce (tP52, spacegroup P4/nbm N 125-1)andnewYNi6Si6-type structurefor R¼Y,Sm,Gd–Yb (tP52, spacegroup P4b2N 117)thatare tetragonalderivativeofNaZn13-type structure,likeLaCo9Si4-type. The CeNi6Si6, GdNi6Si6, TbNi6Si6, DyNi6Si6 and HoNi6Si6 compounds areCurie–Weissparamagnets down to 30 K,anddonotordermagneticallydownto5K.However,theinverseparamagnetic susceptibility ofLaNi6Si6 does notfollowCurie–Weisslaw. The DyNi6Si6 showsferromagnetic-likesaturationbehaviourat5Kinapplied fields of50kOe,giving rise toamagneticmomentvalueof6.5 μB/f.u. in50kOe.Thepowderneutrondiffractionstudyinzero applied filed indicatessquaremodulatedthe c-collinear antiferromagneticorderingofTbNi6Si6 with K¼[71/4, 71/4, 0]wavevectorbelow 10 K.
