Basing myself on the oppositions mā faʿala vs lam yafʿal, and mā yafʿalu vs lā yafʿalu I shall deal with the grammaticalisation of the Arabic negative particle mā indirectly from the interrogative particle mā and directly from the indefinite pronoun mā. The morphological identity of the relative pronoun mā and the negative particle mā - interpreted on the basis of diachronic and synchronic data - would suggest the negation with mā is a type of negation that could be defined as 'correlative negation', which seems to be corroborated by the use of mimation as a correlative marker in the most archaic Semitic languages.
