Starting from Ernst Jandl's poem “wien: heldenplatz” and a brief overview of Jandl's poetic production, the contribution looks at the sociolinguistic situation before and after the Anschluss, the point in time marked by the poem, offers comparative outlines of Austrian German and Binnendeutsch and addresses Jandl’s German from a pluricentric perspective. On the basis of Luigi Reitani’s Italian translation and the pioneering interpretations of the text by Reitani and Jörg Drews, the article shows how Jandl deconstructs political myth through his poetolect.

Abstract

Starting from Ernst Jandl's poem “wien: heldenplatz” and a brief overview of Jandl's poetic production, the contribution looks at the sociolinguistic situation before and after the Anschluss, the point in time marked by the poem, offers comparative outlines of Austrian German and Binnendeutsch and addresses Jandl’s German from a pluricentric perspective. On the basis of Luigi Reitani’s Italian translation and the pioneering interpretations of the text by Reitani and Jörg Drews, the article shows how Jandl deconstructs political myth through his poetolect.
