The paper reports the first encouraging results relating to the recent use of Bio-fit femoral components in secondary operations due to the aseptic mobilization of the stem in cemented (5 cases: 4 Stanmore, 1 mueller) and non-cemented (1 case: Lord) hip prostheses. in the preparation of the diaphyseal canal in cemented hip prostheseis a relatively wide notch has been always made opposite to the distal part of the removed stem in order to ensure the full removal of the cement and allow a direct view of the preparation of a suitable housing for the bio-fit stem. This also allows the movement and fit of the latter into the underlying diaphyseal canal to be checked. The Bio-fit femoral component only had to be cemented in one case, whereas in the other 5 cases it was fitted without cemetn, except fpor a small amount which was considered necessary in three cases to fill in the trochanteric cavity which had been eroded and sunk.

Abstract: | The paper reports the first encouraging results relating to the recent use of Bio-fit femoral components in secondary operations due to the aseptic mobilization of the stem in cemented (5 cases: 4 Stanmore, 1 mueller) and non-cemented (1 case: Lord) hip prostheses. in the preparation of the diaphyseal canal in cemented hip prostheseis a relatively wide notch has been always made opposite to the distal part of the removed stem in order to ensure the full removal of the cement and allow a direct view of the preparation of a suitable housing for the bio-fit stem. |
