Work on the design of a new cotyle model for a hip prosthesis underscores the importance of experimental evaluation of the influence that the main morphological and positioning parameters exert on the motility of the implant as a whole. Tests with a specially devised apparatus made it clear that the distance between the centre of rotation and the plane of the joint surface should be kept as low as possible, and that the base of the joint surface should ensure that the flexo-extension limit was not represented by the contact between the components of the prosthesis. An assessment of the way various positions of the new cotyle in its implant site might influence motiliy was also carried out.

Abstract

Work on the design of a new cotyle model for a hip prosthesis underscores the importance of experimental evaluation of the influence that the main morphological and positioning parameters exert on the motility of the implant as a whole. Tests with a specially devised apparatus made it clear that the distance between the centre of rotation and the plane of the joint surface should be kept as low as possible, and that the base of the joint surface should ensure that the flexo-extension limit was not represented by the contact between the components of the prosthesis. An assessment of the way various positions of the new cotyle in its implant site might influence motiliy was also carried out.
