A nutritional assessment follow-up was conducted of 52 patients with oesophageal carcinoma, in order to verify its clinical utility. Simple 'single' and more complex 'integrated indexes' were utilized. The results demonstrated significant initial malnutrition followed by a rapidly satisfactory restoration of palliated patients and, on the contrary, a delayed and slow improvement in the patients given surgical resection. In conclusion, malnutrition represents the most important factor in this oesophageal disease and its study with the aid of simple indexes is useful in deciding whether to adopt surgical treatment. It also represents an efficient prognostic factor.

Abstract
A nutritional assessment follow-up was conducted of 52 patients with oesophageal carcinoma, in order to verify its clinical utility. Simple 'single' and more complex 'integrated indexes' were utilized. The results demonstrated significant initial malnutrition followed by a rapidly satisfactory restoration of palliated patients and, on the contrary, a delayed and slow improvement in the patients given surgical resection. In conclusion, malnutrition represents the most important factor in this oesophageal disease and its study with the aid of simple indexes is useful in deciding whether to adopt surgical treatment. It also represents an efficient prognostic factor.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
