The Regional Law No 14/1990 fundamentally contributed to the understanding, enhancement as well as protection of the karstic ecosystem. Furthermore it allowed the identification of regional karstic areas as well as the drawing of the related rules concerning land planning and management. The new Regional Law No 39/2009 concerning geodiversity attached importance to the karst aquifers protection: an updating of the existing karst areas is required to this purpose; these areas will represent an essential level of the Water Protection Master Plan. Besides providing a summary of the results that have been obtained more than two decades after the issuing of the regional rules regarding speleology, the purpose of this work is to provide a methodology for redefining the karst areas. The starting point is represented by information concerning caves register; the first step towards a new redefinition of karst areas can be obtained through the introduction of information levels concerning karst-prone rock formations that can be provided by the regional data bank. This redefinition will be divided into a first level according to the Hydrogeological Tectonic Units and a second level according to its geographical location. This level will be further divided according to geomorphology into recharge areas – both scattered or concentrated – and karstic spring areas.
