The works of Nicole Oresme are replete with reflections on themes which constitute the core of Medieval's "musical aesthetics": the analysis of the pleasures arisen by music in men and animals, the divisions of music, the connection between music and ethics, the explanation of the concept of catharsis. This paper analyzes all these topics, showing the peculiar shade that they acquire in Oresme's writings, where the aristotelic and platonic traditional interpretations of those subjects find themselves blended with biblical readings in order to refer facts that Oresme could not understand, or imagine, to circumstances or modes of thought more usual to his own time.
