The adhesion process depends on the mechanical and chemical characteristics of surfaces, therefore the pretraitment of the bonding area has a great importance in industrial application of metal gluing. The study analyses the importance on the bond quality of the microgeometric parameters which describe the surfaces. Both periodic and random profiles are considered. Experimental data for the single lap geometry and aluminum adherends are reported and the dependence of shear strength on the roughness parameters is discussed. © 1989 CIRP.

Abstract

The adhesion process depends on the mechanical and chemical characteristics of surfaces, therefore the pretraitment of the bonding area has a great importance in industrial application of metal gluing. The study analyses the importance on the bond quality of the microgeometric parameters which describe the surfaces. Both periodic and random profiles are considered. Experimental data for the single lap geometry and aluminum adherends are reported and the dependence of shear strength on the roughness parameters is discussed. © 1989 CIRP.
