Abstract

This paper gives an overview of the state of the art of Action Research in organizational studies. After having shown the main characteristics of Action Research, attention is paid on its principles and methodological developments. We explore three aspects: 1) Action Research as a “reflective practice”; 2) the participatory principle; 3) the researcher-local stakeholders relationship. Quality and rigour of Action Research is a crucial theme in literature today: we discuss conditions and rules, suggested by Action Researchers, to set up an Action Research process able to produce valid and useful social knowledge.
