EnglishAfter an overview about the geographic and socio-economic literature on the subject of principles for identifying cities and urban population, the A. devises an original standard founded upon a threshold of workers occupied in the so-called central functions. On this basis, an urban hierarchy is drawn, as well as an original index to estimate the degree of functional equipment of Italian cities and urban municipalities.
