The olive tree has been a silent element of the chanson de geste of the Middle Ages. The Northern France has early developed an epic literature focused on the heroes of the Charles the Great's court (XII-XIII centuries). The paladins of the king are always engaged in the war against the infidels, both the Sarasin and the rebel vassals. In addition to the brave and the military strength, those wars require diplomacy and guile. Thus, before the battles, the king reunites the heroes under an olive tree in order to organize the war. The tree became an auspicious sign for the war; it had been charged of the religious symbolism that is based on the episode of Jesus Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, the night of the Last Supper. The article will try to highlight the role of the olive tree in the chanson de geste, trying to highlight the different roles of the tree.
