In this work, we present and analyze two didactic experiences realized in grades 4 and 5, focused on data interpretation and their graphic representations. These experiences are part of a wider path aimed at building the basis for educating citizens who are able to interpret the information available to them and to make sound and appropriate decisions. These activities are contextualized in the normal classroom life of children, which make the problems of investigation strongly motivating. We will show how in the chosen context the interpretation of data allows interesting mathemati- cal discussions in which students confront each other, formulate hypothesis and produce argumentations.

Abstract

In this work, we present and analyze two didactic experiences realized in grades 4 and 5, focused on data interpretation and their graphic representations. These experiences are part of a wider path aimed at building the basis for educating citizens who are able to interpret the information available to them and to make sound and appropriate decisions. These activities are contextualized in the normal classroom life of children, which make the problems of investigation strongly motivating. We will show how in the chosen context the interpretation of data allows interesting mathemati- cal discussions in which students confront each other, formulate hypothesis and produce argumentations.
