The paper focuses on the different means that several legal orders has implemented about the promotion of vaccines, especialli after the growth of the anti-vaccine movement. A special attention is devoted to the role of sanctions, highlighting all the difficulties which arise from the balance between personal autonomy and public interest. The essay suggests that coercitive tools are not always the best way to enlarge the herd immunity, whereas persuasive instruments could better achieve the goal. In consdieration of the issues signalled in this paper it is possibile to assert that a well-balanced between coercitives and persuasive measures could be attainted through a deep consideration of precautionary principle, science and adequate dissemination of information.
