The importance of Greek philosophy for Kazuo Ishiguro’s writing has escaped the notice of critics altogether. This article posits the influence of Plato’s Republic and Lysias on aspects of Never Let Me Go, such as the social role of the clones, the dynamis of friendship, the tension between essence and existence, and mythopoesis. One of the aims is to reveal the novel’s close intertwining of ethics and biopolitics.
