The profile of Domenico Bissoni, wood carver and sculptor active in Genoa between the end of the sixteenth century and the beginning of the seventeenth century, is composed of a small number of safely attributable works. According to most sources, Bissoni's most famous work was housed at the Our Lady of the Rosary of the church of San Domenico. This sculptural group was lost with the suppression of the religious order (1798), which was followed by the destruction of the church (1818). Here for the first time it is proposed that this lost work be identified with the statue preserved in the Oratory of Our Lady of the Rosary at Santa Maria di Castello in Genoa, datable to a final years of the sixteenth century.

Abstract
The profile of Domenico Bissoni, wood carver and sculptor active in Genoa between the end of the sixteenth century and the beginning of the seventeenth century, is composed of a small number of safely attributable works. According to most sources, Bissoni's most famous work was housed at the Our Lady of the Rosary of the church of San Domenico. This sculptural group was lost with the suppression of the religious order (1798), which was followed by the destruction of the church (1818). Here for the first time it is proposed that this lost work be identified with the statue preserved in the Oratory of Our Lady of the Rosary at Santa Maria di Castello in Genoa, datable to a final years of the sixteenth century.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
