Aim of this work is to analyse the relationship between philosophers and monarchs in Plutarch’s Life of Dion. Plutarch describes Plato’s experiences in educating both Dionysius II and Dion: the author’s major interest is to show what is the reason behind the failure of the tyrant’s education given by the philosopher. We will underline the conflict between ethics and politics through the analyses of Dion’s actions: why does Plato’s pupil fail?
