Drawing on notarial archives and concentrating on the small community of Laigueglia, this article seeks to provide a deeper and very extensive history of the pre-industrial economy in Liguria and its very strong impact on a local community: coral fishing in the Tyrrhenian Sea, which took place every year between April and September. In particular, this research covers the last quarter of the seventeenth century, which a careful examination of the records indicates as being a period of maximum expansion for this maritime activity in western Liguria. The coral fishers sailed to the coral beds around Sardinia (Bosa, Alghero, Castello Aragonese–Castelsardo today) and simultaneously engaged in minor forms of trafficking, on both their outbound and return voyages (cheese, meat, wheat). This analysis focuses on the way these expeditions to Sardinia’s coral beds were organized and financed and on the relationship between merchants and boat owners when recruiting sailors and selling “red gold” on the market. The competition between Genoa and Livorno for seizing coral in Liguria and Sardinia contributed to illicit practices in the Tyrrhenian Sea but, at the same time, revealed the various choices involved in marketing coral and distributing profits among crew members.

Abstract
The competition between Genoa and Livorno for seizing coral in Liguria and Sardinia contributed to illicit practices in the Tyrrhenian Sea but, at the same time, revealed the various choices involved in marketing coral and distributing profits among crew members.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
