Abstract

Recently, experimental studies investigated the quality of green roof subsurface outflows in order to evaluate the green roof performance in reducing the pollutant load discharged into receiving water bodies. The main objective of this research is to investigate the pollutant load associated with storm water discharges from green roof systems focusing on nitrogen leaching. To this aim a monitoring programme is actually carried on at the University of Genova on a full-scale intensive green roof site. Preliminary results indicate that the distribution of nitrogen among the different species is far from being constant and strongly event dependent.
