Some broad syntheses dedicated to Genoa and Liguria between Late Antiquity and the 10th-11th centuries have been published in recent years. These scientific works are characterized by proposals of interpretative models that can stimulate a fruitful discussion, as part of the progressive construction of the regional archaeological and historical knowledge. Starting with a critical reading of these papers, the article proposes a methodological reflection on the real quality of the data available and their use as a synthesis. The geographic area of analysis is Eastern Liguria. The focus of the study is mainly directed to the coastal area and the rural settlements, without analyzing in detail Genoa and Luni, to which recent summaries have been devoted. The discussion of data is organized into sections focusing on general methodological questions (2), detailed critical analysis of some studies (3/6), and conclusions (7). The conclusion presents some open questions and proposes some possible archaeological research itineraries for study over the next few years.
