Abstract

Massimo Bontempelli found his way to the First World War battlefield between August and September 1915 as a war correspondent for the national newspaper «Il Messaggero». It was the first time that the Italian military command allowed a few selected journalists to reach the battlefront for what was considered «an experiment». By the end of 1915 Bontempelli’s reports were collected and published in a book. Even if limited by military censorship and by the need to be consistent with war bulletins, his battle reports are relevant for their measured writing style. They also contain important considerations on the task and function of a writer in times of war.
