In the Mediterranean Sea, coralligenous assemblages are highly diversified biogenic structures, rich in biodiversity and sources of important ecosystem services. According to the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive, the coralligenous habitat can be considered also a significant bioindicator of the environmental quality. In this brief review, we present some new perspectives regarding the study and monitoring of this habitat, aiming at highlighting some of the most recent scientific and conservationist advancements in this field.
