Welcome back. Retro and revival, heritage and vintage: presence of the past in contemporary design processes

The book collects the contributions for the “Day of Studies”, with the same title, held in Genoa on 10/05/2017. The paper examines how after an intense strike of the routine and the status quo something slightly incomprehensible happens: there is a turning back in styling. Stronger than a simple reference, deeper than the easy search for an inspiration. While the style mentioning requires the mastering of the period itself and in addition demands for a whole creative design process, the mentioning renewal seems and presents itself as the shortest and the easiest way. There is a big issue and a big difference between the worth of history, transposed in the contemporaneity, and the mere – and barren – use of the past.

Il libro raccoglie i contributi per la “Giornata di Studi”, dall’omonimo titolo tenutasi a Genova presso il Dipartimento Architettura e Design, in data 10/05/2017. Il testo esamina come dopo un cambiamento nella routine e una forte alterazione dello status quo qualcosa difficilmente comprensibile accade: in qualche modo, ci si volge al passato, per ciò che interessa lo stile e il design. Tale ‘ritorno’ è più forte di un semplice riferimento, più profondo della facile ricerca di ispirazione. Tuttavia, mentre la citazione per stile richiede un'adeguata competenza sul periodo, che si rivela nel processo creativo e progettuale, il rinnovamento citazionista si presenta come una via di facile accesso. Lo scritto esamina attraverso casi studio ed esempi la differenza e la problematicità del valore della storia, trasposto nella contemporaneità, o d’altra parte il mero e sterile uso del passato, seguiti come una tendenza per le più svariate ragioni.
