The painting by Sandro Botticelli in the Uffizi has been the center of a heated art-historic debate for about a hundred years of art's criticism.What has fascinated scholars has been the attempt to decipher the complex iconography that the artist created with his brush.Through a thorough investigation of the classical literary sources and contemporary sources to the artist, this contribution aims to bring order in the reading of the iconography of the painting and to bring to the attention of scholars, with new and original considerations, a possible unified and complete interpretation of the controversial painting.
