A collaborative monitoring programme on cetacean has been established in central-western Mediterranean Sea. The network of scientific bodies monitor all cetacean species along ferries routes which cross the Mediterranean basin, following a standard protocol for data collection and data storing. Outputs of the programme are a baseline for long term - large scale data on cetacean distribution and relative abundance. The programme has the potential to be easily and sustainably shared over the entire Mediterranean basin.

Abstract
