The Principle of Hope and the Radical Utopia: Ernst Bloch. In Ernst Bloch’s chief work hope is analysed not only as man’s main affection, but also as a fundamental positive attitude towards reality and, ultimately, as a constitutive principle of human acting and being, and indeed of being itself. Hope is here a human feature which transcends the factual state of affairs, but does not need a transcendent foundation or warrant. However, hope implies a picture of the future wished for, produced by the utopian imagination. For Bloch utopia has like hope various meanings and levels of increasing radicality, from the social-political through the aesthetical to the religious and ontological one. But in order to be realized, an utopian project must be mediated with the given conditions and tendencies. Projects and hopes are thus fallible and deceivable, yet their principle will not fall along with partial attempts.
