The paper is the result of research carried out around Villa Mirenda (Florence). In the summer of 1996 I was asked by David Ellis, who was completing the third volume of the CUP Biography, to try to gather information about Giulia Pini (her age and details of her life when she worked for the Lawrences) and about her precise relationship with Pietro Pini. This research (somewhat difficult at the beginning, since there was no trace of the Pini family in the area around Villa Mirenda) eventually led me to take a fascinating path, which not only enabled me to discover the material I was looking for, but happily culminated in direct contact with various people, most of them still alive, who had met Lawrence when he lived at Villa Mirenda.
