This work starts from an agreement between two institutions within the University of Genova: the laboratory of Bioengineering and Medical Informatics (MEDINFO) of the Department of Communication Computer and System Science (DIST), and the section of Microbiology of the Department of Specialist Surgery, Anesthesiology and Organ Transplant (DISCAT). The purpose was to translate microbiological reports from an obsolete file structure to a system which could guarantee: a quicker and more correct transmission of data about analysis results, a system of storage which reduces the possibility of errors, a smoother manipulation, consultation and updating of data and, a simple way to compute the cost of the analysis performed by the microbiology section, on the base of the costs determined by the national’s Diagnosis Related Groups (DRG), and, mainly, the possibility to classify them in accordance with the requiring divisions or in accordance with the type of exam, computing the cost of the total amount of the analysis executed during a given period. Data is collected daily by a semiautomatic Visual Basic interface, which translates these raw data into a modern relational database. This Database can be then smoothly utilized to extract necessary data for the computing of the cost of analysis. The need of assuming a standard for the communication of data is becoming more and more demanding, there is also the need for the data produced by this interface to be used by the entire hospital information system. An HL7 output has been chosen precisely for this reason, to conform to the international standards.
