The present paper deals with two different riddles, one found in Saxo's Gesta Danorum (beginning of XIIIth century), the other in De defectu oraculorum, written by Plutarch in the first century A.D. After analyzing the two riddles, the Author proposes a solution for both, and finds them similar - notwithstanding the different time and place - since both were written at the passage of one historical and cultural period to another, from pagan religion to Christendom in one case and from the archaic belief in oracles to a world governed by human reason in the other

Abstract

The present paper deals with two different riddles, one found in Saxo's Gesta Danorum (beginning of XIIIth century), the other in De defectu oraculorum, written by Plutarch in the first century A.D. After analyzing the two riddles, the Author proposes a solution for both, and finds them similar - notwithstanding the different time and place - since both were written at the passage of one historical and cultural period to another, from pagan religion to Christendom in one case and from the archaic belief in oracles to a world governed by human reason in the other
