Abstract: This paper presents a mathematical and a numerical model for the dynamic simulation of a waterjet propulsion system for a small patrol craft. The transient performance of a craft is an important parameter for both design and operational points of view. The motivation of this work was the assessment of the acceleration behaviour of the boat and the evaluation of the elapsed time from rest to planning condition. The numerical model, developed in a Matlab-Simulink software environment, is structured in a modular form. The various elements of the propulsion chain (hull, prime mover, gear, waterjet, etc.) have been modelled as individuals blocks and are connected each other in a way to take into account the interactions. In this way it is possible to characterise the dynamic behaviour of both the single components and the whole propulsion plant.
