Abstract

The article chronicles the origins and later developments of the discipline in the country, following the different generations that, starting with the “founding fathers” of the late 1950s and 1960s, strove to establish it as a part of the Italian historical profession. It shows the undeniable level of institutionalisation that, thanks to the efforts of such generations of scholars, the study of U. S. history has attained, as shown by the number of practitioners holding an official position at the dawn of the new millennium, as compared to three decades before. But it also shows the problems of growth and reproduction that, in spite of the unquestionable cultural authority achieved by some of its members within the national and international scientific communities, the discipline is undergoing nowadays in a changing academic national environment.
