The essay draws a comparison between the aesthetic theory developed by Jean-Baptiste Du Bos in his Réflexions critiques sur la poésie et la peinture (1719) and the eighteenth-century British debate about the arts. Lombard thesis, argued in his book L’Abbé Du Bos (1913), that the influence of the Réflexions on British aesthetics did not antedate its English translation (1748), is confirmed, but new attention is given to the affinities between Du Bos’s idea of “sentiment” and John Dennis’s “pathetic” theory of poetry as formulated in The Advancement and Reformation of Modern Poetry (1701) and The Grounds of Criticism in Poetry (1704). Also, Hume’s and Burke’s relations to Du Bos are re-discussed with special emphasis on the question of the standard of taste.
