Simulation modeling is a well established approach for "what if.." analysis whenever the complexity of the systems or processes to be represented makes heuristic as well as analytical approaches unable to capture all the necessary aspects of their behavior. This paper, building from a specific business case, analyzes the benefits of simulation in solving reverse management problems such as investigating the causes leading to a given business situation. Given a snapshot of the current business situation, the simulation tool tests the hypotheses that may have led to produce it and evaluates them with respect to all the logical, technical, regulatory and resource constraints pertaining to that particular aspect of business. This last step is a reality check in order to discard all the solutions that may be inconsistent with the actual business practices. This cross-check is the key to finding the actual causes of a given situation, by filtering out solutions which are not compatible with the applicable constraints. The paper proposes the case study as a reference for validating and verifying the procedure proposed.
