“Republicanism and the French Revolution. An intellectual history of Jean-Baptiste Say’s political economy” has two central aims, corresponding to the two lines of its title. The first is to provide a new understanding of intellectual movements in France in 1790s and after; the second is to reinterpret J.-B. Say’s political economy and reveal its commitment to “modern republicanism”. Whatmore has been working for long on both of these themes from the standpoint of intellectual history, so this book can be considered as a milestone on his pathway. This book offers a considerable support to understand that intellectual project and makes it attractive even nowadays, thanks to its wide erudition and clear style. In this case economists can learn something useful about political economy from a non-economist.

Abstract: | “Republicanism and the French Revolution. |
