The Authors analyse the characteristics of juvenile inmates' population of the juvenile penal institution "Cesare Beccaria" (Milano) along ten years (from 1976 to 1985). They observe the evolution in time of the characteristics of juveniles admitted to the institution (age, region or nation of birth, residence, etc.), of the crimes attributed to them, and of the institutional response to their behavior. According to the observed data, the Authors stress the irrationality in the use of the juvenile prison, which fulfils no one of the aims attributed to it by both actual juvenile law, and collective attitudes (prevention, rehabilitation, retribution).
