The indirect measurement of sea waves based on shipboard observations deserves high interest, since it constitutes an invaluable support to navigation and it can provide valuable information for met-ocean forecasting. On the scientific side, it poses a challenging complex inverse-dynamics problem, and different approaches have been proposed over the last, say, twenty years. A new approach is here proposed, developed so far in the case of regular waves, with very good results, which encourages to pursue it further.

Abstract

The indirect measurement of sea waves based on shipboard observations deserves high interest, since it constitutes an invaluable support to navigation and it can provide valuable information for met-ocean forecasting. On the scientific side, it poses a challenging complex inverse-dynamics problem, and different approaches have been proposed over the last, say, twenty years. A new approach is here proposed, developed so far in the case of regular waves, with very good results, which encourages to pursue it further.
