On the Settimana santa ben avventurosamente sfuggita by Giovanni Ambrosio Marini · In 1657, during the most devastating plague epidemic to ever strike Genoa, Giovanni Ambrosio Marini published the Settimana santa ben avventurosamente sfuggita. Despite its many points of interest, the Settimana santa has been largely overlooked by specific literary studies. The narrative follows eight mostly dissolute Genoese noblemen, who flee the city to avoid Easter ceremonies and take refuge in a recently closed convent. Over the course of Holy Week, from Palm Sunday to Easter, these noblmen convert to a life of asceticism through sermons, moral dialogues, and five hagiographical tales. Marini’s text is a literary experiment that blends diπerent genres and rewrites, moralizing them, models such as Boccaccio’s Decameron and Anton Giulio Brignole Sale’s Instabilità dell’Ingegno.
