In light of the current debate on the role of nuclear energy in the energy transition, does it still make sense to talk about this resource as a potential prospect to be exploited or will renewable sources alone be able not only to satisfy current energy demand, but also to solve all problems, both environmental and energetic, present and future? After a concise analysis of the current state-of-the-art of nuclear energy, the problems that hinder a more extensive and continuous use of this source are presented and discussed and it is highlighted how present, but even more future, developments of nuclear technology are able to face and overcome them. Additionally ,the paper outlines the contribution of nuclear energy in an energy field not limited to electricity production alone.
