This paper aims to understand the aesthetic influence of the microphotographies both in popular scientific and artistic contexts, with a specifical focus regarding the Italian context. In the first section I approach the dialectic between art and science considering the first books and theories about microscopy and its philosophical impact on epistemology and on art theory. Then I developed this dialectic in order to understand the relation between traditional abstraction and new postwar abstraction in Italy, using some historical case studies.

Abstract

This paper aims to understand the aesthetic influence of the microphotographies both in popular scientific and artistic contexts, with a specifical focus regarding the Italian context. In the first section I approach the dialectic between art and science considering the first books and theories about microscopy and its philosophical impact on epistemology and on art theory. Then I developed this dialectic in order to understand the relation between traditional abstraction and new postwar abstraction in Italy, using some historical case studies.
