The paper aims to show that the use of the word πρόνοια in Acts 24:2 does not have the generic ethical or philosophical meaning of ‘providence’, as often found in the commentaries, but the juridical meaning of ‘farsighted provisions’. This interpretation is supported by a wide examination of contemporary literary, epigraphic and papyrological sources, where one can find a frequent and formalized use of this lexeme in reference to the administrative activity of emperors and governors of provinces.

Abstract
The paper aims to show that the use of the word πρόνοια in Acts 24:2 does not have the generic ethical or philosophical meaning of ‘providence’, as often found in the commentaries, but the juridical meaning of ‘farsighted provisions’. This interpretation is supported by a wide examination of contemporary literary, epigraphic and papyrological sources, where one can find a frequent and formalized use of this lexeme in reference to the administrative activity of emperors and governors of provinces.File in questo prodotto:
